Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.

There are 3 subspecies: murina, meridensis and cyanodorsalis.
This species is sometimes also placed in Orochelidon.

High altitude shrubland, grassland and pastures.

The diet includes insects.
