Identification
17 cm- 18cm. A tanager with a plumage similar to that of a foliage-gleaner.
- Brown plumage, more greyish on crown, nape and mantle
- Cinnamon face, forecrown and eyebrow
- Blackish line from lores through eye to nape
- Thick blackish bill, sligthyl swollen
Sexes similar. Juveniles duller.
Distribution
South America: found in the foothills of south-eastern Brazil (south Bahia and Minas Gerais to Paraná).
Uncommon to fairly common in its habitat.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Atlantic evergreen forest at 750-1,600 m above sea level2.
Behaviour
Frequently seen in mixed-species flocks often with similar looking Buff-fronted Foliage-gleaner.
Diet
Feeds on insects. Takes also some fruit.
Forages in pairs or small groups high in the canopy.
Breeding
Breeding recorded in October in Rio de Janeiro. One found nest was in a bromeliad on the side of a tree trunk and contained 2 pinkish, speckled brown and lavender eggs.
