  • Grey upperparts
  • Grey-barred white underparts
  • White rump
  • Cinnamon buff throat, chest and under tail
  • Violet flanks

Female: lacks the colourful flanks
Juveniles: have white feather tips

South America: endemic to Brazil.

There are 2 subspecies:

  • I. p. leucopygia:
  • Coastal north-eastern Brazil (Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas and Bahia)
  • I. p. pipra:
  • Coastal eastern Brazil (Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo)

Lowland and coastal humid forest and plantations up to 1,000m.

The diet includes primarily mistletoe berries, other fruit and insects.

A tiny cup-shaped nest is built and 1 egg is laid.
