20 cm. Brown back,olive brown underparts, spotted breast, black wings with buff wingbars, buff-streaked dark brown cap, dusky eyestripe, richly buff tufted cheeks, buff throat, long bright rufous tail. Sexes similar. Juvenile lacks buff crown streaks, have sootier backs and underparts and orange flanks.

Costa Rica, western Panama, Colombia and Ecuador.

Clements accepts two subspecies:

Johnsoni is sometimes regarded as full species, Pacific Tuftedcheek.

Wet mountain forests to 1600m.

[edit] Behaviour

It nests in old woodpecker nests and 1 white egg is laid; it is incubated for 29 days.

The diet includes insects, spiders, and small amphibians.
