Length 10-12cm. Grey back, white underparts, black cap and bib, white cheeks, dark grey wings and tail, grey-brown flanks, black bill, grey legs and feet.

Very similar to Black-capped Chickadee. Can be separated by voice but some individuals can learn the wrong song.

Southeastern quarter of the United States.

Polytypic. Consists of four subspecies.

The diet includes spiders, insects, seeds, and fruits.

It nests in holes lined with moss and fur. 3-10 eggs are laid.
