[edit] Description

This genus contains only one species from New Guinea.
This genus is one of only two described bird genera with poisonous members, the other being the genus Pitohui, also from New Guinea.

Ifrita is placed here in the family Eupetidae.
However this species differs from other species of this family considerably in appearance and behaviour. The taxonomic placement is still unsure and it has been placed close to the Niltava flycatchers, the fairywrens and the whistlers. Possibly it belongs in a monotypic family of its own.
