Polytypic. Consists of three subspecies:

*C. p. waltoni:

:*South-easter Tibet to south-western China (south-western Xinjiang)

*C. p. argyrophrys:

:*Western China (Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu and western Sichuan)

*C. p. davidianus:

:*Central Mongolia (south to south-western Inner Mongolia)

Some authorities treat this species as monotypic. They place waltoni in Pink-rumped Rosefinch and argyrophrys in Himalayan Beautiful Rosefinch.
