Identification

22-27cm

  • Brown crown with white spots
  • Chestnut back
  • Tawny throat
  • Brown breast streaked tawny
  • Brown belly with black bars
  • White spotted collar
  • Heavy, pale bill

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.

Habitat

Humid forests, especially with palm trees, and swamps.

Behaviour

Breeding

They nest in a cavity or old woodpecker nest. 2-3 eggs are laid.

Diet

The diet includes locusts, beetles and fruit.
