Distribution
Sub-Saharan Africa
Western Africa: Mali, Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Central African Republic and Equatorial Guinea
Eastern Africa: Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Uganda.
Taxonomy
Pternistis vs. Francolinus
Sibley & Monroe (1996) placed this species in the genus Pternistis, but this genus has not been recognized by Clements (2007) or Howard & Moore (2003), and the Opus follows in this consensus.
This is a monotypic species[1]. A number of subspecies are not recognised by most authorities[2].
