Identification
Length 17cm. A mid-sized flycatcher of typical morph but with drab dark plumage and no wing bars. Upperparts dark grey, underparts slilghtly lighter. A black cap with a hidden bright yellow patch are the most diagnostic markings for this species.
Distribution
Brazil and Bolivia to Argentina, on east slope of Andes only. During the austral winter, it migrates into the mostly western and central Amazon Basin as a non-breeding resident. It is resident southward to central latitudes of Argentina.
It has occurred as a vagrant in both Panama and Louisiana[2].
Taxonomy
Crowned Slaty Flycatcher is placed in its own genus (Griseotyrannus) by some authorities[2] (discussion in this thread).
Subspecies
There are two subspecies[1]:
- E. a. pallidiventris:
- Eastern Brazil (Rio Tapajos to northern Goi southern and Piau¡)
- E. a. aurantioatrocristatus:
Habitat
Tall, dry woods, forest edges, savannahs with trees.
Behaviour
Typical behaviour for a flycatcher - returns to a favorite perch repeatedly after sorties to collect insects.
