Identification
Resembles the Crested Barbet and the Red-and-yellow Barbet but is smaller than both, lacks a crest and has no red in the face. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills.
Distribution
East Africa, including southeastern Sudan, northeastern Uganda, Kenya, northern Tanzania.

D'Arnaud's Barbet is treated by some authorities as being conspecific with the Usambiro Barbet (Trachyphonus usambiro) although other authorities treat the Usambiro Barbet as a subspecies of D'Arnaud's (Trachyphonus darnaudii usambiro).

Inhabits bushed grassland and dry scrub.
