Identification
Resembles the Crested Barbet and the Red-and-yellow Barbet but is smaller than both, lacks a crest and has no red in the face. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills.
Distribution
East Africa, including southeastern Sudan, northeastern Uganda, Kenya, northern Tanzania.
Taxonomy
Four subspecies recognized:
- T.d. darnaudii
- T.d. boehmi
- T.d. emini
- T.d. usambiro
The last one is sometimes regarded as full species, Usambiro Barbet (Trachyphonus usambiro), but as Clements and Howard & Moore both don't accept this, we treat it as a subspecies. This form is found in SW Kenya and N and C Tanzania.
Habitat
Inhabits bushed grassland and dry scrub.
