Identification

17-18cm.

Dark streaked breast
Thin pale crown stripe
Long neck
Long legs
Slightly curved bill

Distribution

Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt.
In Morocco, this species remains very localised but can be found in the east of the Middle-Atlas mountainous chains¹.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies are recognised²: duponti and margaritae.

Habitat

Steppes with scrubland.

Behaviour

It is a ground nester; 3-4 eggs are laid.

The diet includes insects and seeds.

Vocalisation

The song is mostly given at night and has a certain "electronic" quality.
