Chersophilus duponti

Identification

17-18cm

• Dark streaked breast
• Thin pale crown stripe
• Long neck
• Long legs
• Slightly curved bill

Distribution

Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt.
In Morocco, this species remains very localised but can be found in the east of the Middle-Atlas mountainous chains¹.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies are recognised²:

• C. d. duponti:

• Iberian Peninsula, Morocco, northern Algeria and north-western Tunisia

• C. d. margaritae:

• Algeria (southern slopes of Atlas Mountains) to south-eastern Tunisia, northern Libya and north-western Egypt

Habitat

Steppes with scrubland.

Behaviour

Breeding

It is a ground nester; the clutch consists of 3-4 eggs.

Diet

The diet includes insects and seeds.

Vocalisation

The song is mostly given at night and has a certain "electronic" quality.
