Distribution

From Lesser Sundas (Indonesia) to New Guinea, Australia, Solomon Islands, Samoa and Vanuatu.

Taxonomy

Dickinson and Gill and Donsker recognize five subspecies:

Clements includes this species in Barn Owl. The taxonomic situation of the Barn Owls is not yet fully solved.
Gill and Donsker also include the subspecies stertens, javanica and crassirostris and give the scientific name Tyto javanica for the enlarged species.
