Identification
A common drab brown/grey bird.
Distribution
Widespread throughout most of Fiji islands but absent from some smaller islands.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 12 subspecies[1]:
- C. v. powelli: American Samoa (Tau, Ofu, Olosega and Manua)
- C. v. brunneus: Fiji (Kandavu, Ono and Vanuakula)
- C. v. vitiensis:West Fiji Islands
- C. v. buensis: Fiji (Vanua Levu and Kioa)
- C. v. layardi: Taveuni (Fiji)
- C. v. pontifex: West Fiji Islands (Ngamea and Rambi)
- C. v. wiglesworthi: Rotuma Island (Fiji)
- C. v. vatuanus: North Lau Archipelago (eastern Fiji Islands)
- C. v. nesiotes: South Lau Archipelago (eastern Fiji Islands)
- C. v. heinei: Central Tonga Islands
- C. v. fortunae: Futuna and Alifi islands (Wallis and Futuna Group)
- C. v. keppeli: Keppel and Boscawen islands (between Tonga and Samoa)
Habitat
Primary forest but also found in thick woodland and scrub areas.
Behaviour
Often seen with feeding groups of several other forest species.
Diet
Probes and searches for insects and larvae in dead leaves, vines and tree bark.
Vocalisation
Call: easily identified by the descending single note call.
