Identification
Distribution
Endemic to east-central Madagascar.
Taxonomy
Sometimes placed in genus Pseudocossyphus.
Subspecies
Three to four subspecies recognized:
- M. s. sharpei:
- Humid forests of east-central Madagascar
- M. s. bensoni:
- Montane rocky areas of south-central Madagascar
- M. s. erythronotus:
- Extreme northern Madagascar
- M. s. salomonseni:
- East-central Madagascar - often placed in Littoral Rock Thrush and not accepted by Clements1
Bensoni and erythronotus were formerly considered to be full species, however recent resarch is not supporting this. Erytrhonotus was also considered to be a subspecies of Littoral Rock Thrush.
Habitat
Rocky highland areas (bensoni) and highland rain forests.
