Identification

The name comes from the faint white freckling on the breast. Note also the yellow iris and the brown crown with faint pale shaft streaking.

Similar Species

Greater Thornbird

Distribution

South America: found in South-east Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and north-east Argentina.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species1.

Spot-breasted Thornbird was until recently treated as a subspecies of Freckle-breasted Thornbird.

Habitat

Almost always near water including thickets in marshes, borders of gallery woodland, etc.

Behaviour

Occasionally forages in the open.
