Identification
104cm. A very large Ibis.
- Silvery grey upper wing-coverts
- Darker body and flight-feathers
- Narrow black stripes across nape
Distribution
Formerly widespread in the lowlands of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and southern Vietnam. Now restricted to southern Vietnam and Cambodia.
An endangered species. The loss of wetlands is probably one of the main causes of decline.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Found near lakes, in swamps, seasonally flooded marshes, paddyfields and humid clearings and pools in deep forest. Restricted to lowlands.
Behaviour
Poorly known.
Diet
Forages in pairs or small flocks. One stomach contained crabs.
Vocalisation
Calls at dawn and dusk. A ringing a-leurk a-leurk
No information on breeding or movements. Probably a sedentary species.
