Identification

38 - 42cm. A Bird-of-paradise with a crow-like appearance.

  • Blie-black head and neck with irididescent blue-green tipping on smooth feathering
  • Dense feathers (not elongated or erectile) above eyes
  • Smooth-plumaged blue-black mantle, back, rump, upperwing and uppertail with iridescent blue and purple to magenta glosses
  • Long, graduated tail
  • Iridiscent tipping on chin and throat form inverted V-shape
  • Underparts like upperparts but with more blue-green iridescence
  • Blood-red eye with brown inner ring
  • Dark grey to black bill
  • Base of culmen ridge broadenend and flattened (to a degree intermediate of Jobi Manucode and Crinkle-collared Manucode)

Females are slightly smaller and have a greener gloss. Juveniles are downy and more brownish-black, immatures duller than adults and with orange-yellow to yellowish-orange eye.

Similar species

Similar to Jobi Manucode and Crinkle-collared Manucode.

Distribution

New Guinea and some adjacent islands.
Common in its range.

Taxonomy

The scientific name was formerly spelled Manucodia atra.

Subspecies

Although the geographical variation seems to be clinal and some authorities treat the species as monotypic, three subspecies are usually recognized[1]:

  • M. a. ater on mainland New Guinea, patchily from Vogelkop east to Huon Gulf and south to Purari River
  • M. a. subalter on West Papuan Islands (Gebe, Waigeo, Gam, Batanta, Salawati, Misool, Aru Islands and southeast peninsula of New Guinea
  • M. a. alter on Tagula Island

Habitat

Lowland forest and many other forest types, occasionally edges of gardens. Occurs from sea-level up to 1100m.

Behaviour

Forages usually singly or in pairs in canopy or subcanopy, also in low dense vegetation. Inconspicuous.

Diet

Feeds mostly on fruits (especially figs), but takes possibly also flowers and some animals (insects and worms).

Breeding

Breeding season from August to March. A monogamous species. The nest is a deep cup made of dead and dry vine tendrils or stems. It's suspendend in a forked branch 4 - 12m above the ground. Lays 1 - 3 eggs.

Presumably a resident species.
