Identification

22·5 cm (8¾-9 in)

  • Overall green plumage
  • Red forehead
  • Golden-yellow upper throat
  • White lower throat
  • Blue or violet tones to wings

Distribution

Asia: found in China, Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia

Taxonomy

Sometimes placed in the genus Megalaima.

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • P. f. franklinii (tonkinensis):
  • P. f. ramsayi (trangensis, minor):
  • P. f. auricularis:
  • Mountains of eastern Laos and southern Vietnam - split as Necklaced Barbet by Gill and Donsker

Habitat

Evergreen, hill and deciduos forest. Observed at heights around 2000m.

Behaviour

It spends much of its time high up around the canopy of trees.

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of fruit and berries, especially figs.

Vocalisation

The 'drum' on trees, which sounds like tok..tok..pok.. Song: the song starts with a trill.
