Identification
22·5 cm (8¾-9 in)
- Overall green plumage
- Red forehead
- Golden-yellow upper throat
- White lower throat
- Blue or violet tones to wings
Distribution
Asia: found in China, Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia
Taxonomy
Sometimes placed in the genus Megalaima.
Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies[1]:
- P. f. franklinii (tonkinensis):
- P. f. ramsayi (trangensis, minor):
- Mountains of central Burma and north-western Thailand south through the Malay Peninsula
- P. f. auricularis:
Habitat
Evergreen, hill and deciduos forest. Observed at heights around 2000m.
Behaviour
It spends much of its time high up around the canopy of trees.
Diet
Their diet consists mostly of fruit and berries, especially figs.
Vocalisation
The 'drum' on trees, which sounds like tok..tok..pok.. Song: the song starts with a trill.
