[edit] Identification

Outer tail feather shaft and racquets 30cm or more. Black plumage with blue-black gloss. Tail forked slightly with outer tail feather shafts ending in spoon-shaped raquets, some times worn or missing. Short crest on forehead. Size-32cm.

Indian subcontinent,south of China thro S.E.Asia to the Greater Sundas.

Forest , the forest edges, plantations, wooded gardens.

Found usually in the middle storey. Like most drongos, hawks after insects from open perches. A superb mimic of the calls of other birds but always has a metallic sound. If territorial, is aggressive and will mob intruders, even large raptors and hornbills.
