Identification

Taxonomy and Distribution

This species has 5 subspecies which together occupy parts of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. The southern melanolaimus group has sometimes been considered a separate species, the Golden-breasted Woodpecker (Colaptes melanolaimus). However, it is known to hybridize with the nominate group, and consequently no current major checklist recognize this split.
