Identification

Male 56-76cm; Female 50cm
Male: Greyish with a white-throat. Pinkish facial skin and green to purple ocelli above.
Female: Darker or plainer then the male, with less distinct ocelli.

Distribution

North east India to south west China, South East Asia and Hainan

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 5 subspecies[1]:

  • P. b. bakeri - north east India and Bhutan
  • P. b. bailyi - Patchily distributed west Assam and adjacent east Himalayas
  • P. b. bicalcaratum - North East Assam and Myanmar to south west Thailand and central Laos
  • P. b. ghigii - Central and north Vietnam to east Tonkin and central Laos
  • P. b. katsumatae - Hainan (south China) - sometimes split as Hainan Peacock-Pheasant

Habitat

Dense broadleaved evergreen forest.
