Identification
Male 56-76cm; Female 50cm
Male: Greyish with a white-throat. Pinkish facial skin and green to purple ocelli above.
Female: Darker or plainer then the male, with less distinct ocelli.
Distribution
North east India to south west China, South East Asia and Hainan
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 5 subspecies[1]:
- P. b. bakeri - north east India and Bhutan
- P. b. bailyi - Patchily distributed west Assam and adjacent east Himalayas
- P. b. bicalcaratum - North East Assam and Myanmar to south west Thailand and central Laos
- P. b. ghigii - Central and north Vietnam to east Tonkin and central Laos
- P. b. katsumatae - Hainan (south China) - sometimes split as Hainan Peacock-Pheasant
Habitat
Dense broadleaved evergreen forest.
Behaviour
Diet
Their varied diet consists of berries, fruits, seeds, figs, grubs and ants,.
Breeding
They display by erecting the small crest, fanning out his wings and tail, showing the female his Ocelli in all their glory.
