IdentificationHighland Tinamou (Bonaparte Tinamou) Nothocercus bonapartei Dark brown above finely vermiculated with black, winges and rump buff-spotted, cinnamon below with wavy blackish bars heaviest on flanks, belly pale-spotted. Crown and sides of head blackish, rufous on nape and throat tawny. The highland tinamou is 15 inches (38.5 centimeters) long and weighs 2 pounds (0.9 kilograms). Its coloring is mottled (spotted) or barred with black and cinnamon on its back and wings. Voice A series of loud hollow and disyllabic calls rendered cu-ya, audible at some distance. DistributionCosta Rica and the Chiriqu Highlands of Panama, west Venezuela, Colombia, eastern Ecuador and north-east Peru. Resident. TaxonomyHabitatCloud forest at 1,300-2,500m. Shy and rarely seen, usually solitary or in small groups of up to five. This tinamou lives in tropical and subtropical rainforests, usually above 5,000 feet (1,500 meters).
