Identification

21.5 - 24.5 cm.

Male

  • Glossy black plumage
  • Dark brown eye
  • Blackish bill, black legs

Female

  • Olive-brown upperparts
  • Greyish head with darker ear-coverts and rufous-buff cheeks
  • Dark brown tail
  • Rufous-buff underparts with blackish cross-lines

Juveniles are not described.

Similar species

Males are blacker than male Cicadabirds.

Distribution

Found on the Seram Laut Islands, Banda Islands, Watubela Islands, Tayandu Islands, Kai Islands and the eastern Lesser Sundas (Romang, Damar and Tanimbar) in the Moluccas, Indonesia.
A poorly known restricted-range species.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Forms a superspecies with Cicadabird, Makira Cicadabird, Sula Cuckoo-shrike and Sumba Cuckoo-shrike.
Has been treated as subspecies of Cicadabird or Sumba Cuckoo-shrike.

Habitat

Forest, secondary woodland and forest edge. Occurs from lowlands up to 1400m.

Behaviour

Feeds on insects.
Forages in middle storey and lower canopy.
No information about breeding.
