Identification
- 9-10 cm (3.5-3.9 ins)
- Dark olive-brown cap with light spots
- Pale buff lores
- Small whitish stripe behind eye
- Greyish-buff ear-coverts streaked or spotted brown
- Dark green or brownish-green upperparts barred yellowish-green
- Pale yellowish-white underparts with broad black bars
- Males with reddish to orange forehead spots
Similar species
Orinoco Piculet is slightly smaller, darker with unbarred upperparts and darker ear-coverts.
Distribution
Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru
Taxonomy
Four subspecies recognized:
- P. l. lafresnayi in southeast Colombia, eastern Ecuador and northern Peru
- P. l. pusillus in north-central Brazil on middle Amazon river east to River Negro
- P. l. taczanowskii in northeast and north-central Peru
- P. l. punctifrons in eastern Peru
Forms a superspecies with Orinoco Piculet.
Habitat
Humid forest, secondary forest, forest edges and clearings.
Occurs in lowlands and foothills up to 1400m, occasionally higher.
Behaviour
Feeds on termites and presumably other small invertebrates.
Forages in middle and lower levels, often in mixed-species flocks.
Breeding season probably from July to November. One recorded nest was in a hole 3m up in a shrup and holded 2 eggs.
Presumably a resident species.
