Anas laysanensis

Dark brown, white eye ring, short yellow-green bill, faint green on head or neck, purple-green on wings, orange legs and feet.

Hawaii. Historically known from Laysan Island. Fossil bones indicate that Laysan Ducks once inhabited all of the main Hawaiian Islands, and probably preferred terrestrial forest habitats before the arrival of humans. A safety population is maintained at Midway Island, which is ironically where the Laysan Rail was also introduced for its conservation, only to be driven to extinction by an outbreak of rats on Midway during World War II.

Diet includes macroinvertebrates, algae, leaves, and seeds (Reynolds et al. 2004).

They build a shallow bowl nest, lined with grass and feathers. 4 eggs are laid.
