Sometimes known as Dark-backed Goldfinch.

10cm. Yellow underparts, white patches on tail and wings. Black upperparts. Females olive-green upperparts, yellow-buff underparts.

Southwestern United States, Venezuela and Peru. Casual vagrant to Kansas.

The Lesser Goldfinch shares the Genus Carduelis with Greenfinches, Redpolls, Siskins, Linnets, other Goldfinches, and the Twite.

Trees and shrubs

Diet includes tree buds and weed seeds.

It builds a cupshaped nest of plant material in a bush or tree and 3-4 blue-white eggs are laid.
