13cm. Fore rump, belly, undertail coverts and vent are white; chin, throat, head, upper breast and back are black. The tail is notched and is black in the centre. Its bill is black and its feet a pinkish-white.

Rocky mountain streams in forested areas, especially waterfalls.

Diet includes aquatic insects as well as plant material.

The nest is a cup made of moss, leaves and grass, leaf material and is usually placed in a rock crevice or ledge, often behind a waterfall. 3-5 eggs are laid.
