Three subspecies recognized:

• B. c. caudatus in the mountains of northern Luzon (northern Philippines)
• B. c. malindangensis on Mount Malindang on northwestern Mindanao (southern Philippines)
• B. c. unicolor on Mount Apo on Mindanao (southern Philippines)

Placed in genus Locustella by Gill and Donsker.
