Chiroxiphia linearis

Identification

Sexes differ. Female's length is 14 cm; Male's length is 21.5–26.5 cm. Male - black with an azure blue back, a red crown with a rear projecting crest, and long, central tail feathers. Females are olive-green. Orange legs and feet.

Distribution

Southern Mexico to Costa Rica.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies are recognized, linearis and fastuosa.

Habitat

Dry or humid forest, and mangroves swamps.

Behaviour

The female builds the nest, incubates eggs, and raises the young on her own. The nest is a shallow cup made of fibres, mosses, grasses, and dry leaves. 1-2 buffy eggs with heavy brown spotting are laid.

Diet includes fruit.

Two males duet with a "ToLeDo" call which helps the pair attract females.
