Contents

Identification

Olive-green upperparts and yellow underparts. White crescents above and below the eyes, slate grey hood extends, black upper breast. The female is similar but paler. The winter adult has paler hood and less distinct eye-ring.

Distribution

Breeds in the western United States and Canada from southern Northwest Territories south to central California, Utah and Colorado, scattered populations south and east of regular range; wintering on the Pacific slope of Mexico.

Taxonomy

Consists of two subspecies.

Subspecies1

  • O. t. monticola - breeds in the interior west
  • O. t. tolmiei - breeds in the pacific coastal states


Hybridizes with Mourning Warbler where ranges overlap.
Placed in genus Geothlypis by Clements.

Habitat

Coniferous forest edges, burns, dense thickets, and streamside growth.

Behaviour

Nests close to ground in dense shrubs.
