Identification
9-10 cm.
Male
- Straight black bill
- Iridescent violet-blue forehead
- Bluish-green hindcrown
- Green rest of upperparts
- Iridescent emerald green throat
- Dusky green belly and undertail-coverts
- Bluish-black, slightly forked tail
Female
- Upperparts similar to male, with white small postocular spot
- Greyish underparts, some green discs on side of breast
- Bluish-black, slightly forked tail, central pair of rectrices with greenish shine, outer rectrices tipped white
Distribution
Pacific slope of western Mexico in south Nayarit, Jalisco and Colima.
A rare to locally common restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Has been considered a part of Crowned Woodnymph in the past.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests, canyons, foothills and probably coffee plantations.
Occurs from 250 to 1200 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on nectar. Gleans also arthropods from foliage or catches them in the air by hawking.
Breeding
Birds in breeding condition recorded from February to March. No other information about breeding.
Movements
This is a sedentary species.
