Identification

9-10 cm.

Male

  • Straight black bill
  • Iridescent violet-blue forehead
  • Bluish-green hindcrown
  • Green rest of upperparts
  • Iridescent emerald green throat
  • Dusky green belly and undertail-coverts
  • Bluish-black, slightly forked tail

Female

  • Upperparts similar to male, with white small postocular spot
  • Greyish underparts, some green discs on side of breast
  • Bluish-black, slightly forked tail, central pair of rectrices with greenish shine, outer rectrices tipped white

Distribution

Pacific slope of western Mexico in south Nayarit, Jalisco and Colima.
A rare to locally common restricted-range species.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Has been considered a part of Crowned Woodnymph in the past.

Habitat

Moist lowland forests, canyons, foothills and probably coffee plantations.
Occurs from 250 to 1200 m.

Behaviour
