[edit] Identification13 cm. Sexually dimorphic. Small 'stubby' Honeyeater with a longish, downcurved bill. Males generaly dusty scarlet with black wings, tail, vent and undertail coverts. Females vary geographically. Generaly like males but scarlet much duller and black replaced with brown. Chuuk ( Truk ) and Kosrae females very like males, Pohnpei females overall more brownish with red wash to breast and rump, Waqab ( Yap ) females similar, but brighter red, Northern Mariana and Belau ( Palau ) as Waqab but with red on crown. Bare parts :- Bill dull, dark grey, legs black, eye reddish. Voice :- Rather long, tuneless, but complex, series of chirps, tweets, wheezes and buzzes. Dawn song somewhat more musical.
