19-21cm

  • Sooty-brown plumage
  • Narrow, rectangular, white rump patch
  • Slightly forked tail
  • Dark bill with tube on top.

Leach's Storm-Petrel

Endemic to the Azores.

[edit] Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
It was formerly included in Band-rumped Storm Petrel.

Pelagic, but seems to stay around the Azores all year.

Quick wing beats between glides on bowed wings.

[edit] Breeding

Breeding season May to early July (unlike Band-rumped Petrel who breeds in winter). It nests in colonies close to the sea in rock crevices and lays a single white egg. Nests are visited only at night.
