Identification
18 cm. A large elaenia with a prominent bifurcated crest, giving a "horned" impression.

Distribution
From southeast Colombia to east Ecuador, east Peru and west Bolivia.
A rare to locally fairly common species, probably extending its range due to deforestation.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Found in moist shrubland in landslides, riparian growth or in man-made clearings in the forest.
Occurs mainly at 250 to 1250 m, sometimes as high as 1800 m.
Behaviour
Usually perches upright on an exposed branch with its crest almost always raised. An active, excited species.
Diet
Feeds on insects and small fruits.
Makes short sallies into the air for its prey.
Breeding
