Identification
Length 13 cm. Sexually monomorphic. Head, body and wings all deep black with metallic blue or turquoise tips to the feathers of the head, upper breast and lesser and median wing coverts. Rump and long uppertail coverts, which reach almost to the tip of the tail, bright, silky white. Inner tail feathers blue with a black tip, outers all black.
Distribution
Fiji.
Rare on the Natewa Peninsula on Vanua Levu.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Formerly regarded conspecific with Taveuni Silktail.
Is now generally regarded as a member of, or very close to, Rhipiduridae, Fantails. Previously considered as a Monarch-flycatcher, or even a Bird-of-Paradise.
Habitat
Found on the lower branches and on the ground in forests.
Behaviour
The diet includes insects, worms and arthropods.
Flicks tail almost constantly while foraging. Found in small groups of up to 5 birds.
