Length 25 cm. The only rufous-winged starling in its range. Dark red iris, black bill and legs. Glossy black pumage in male; female has ash-grey head. Juvenile - brown eyes.

West Africa: Senegal to Cameroon, Central African Republic and western Sudan.

Onychognathus neumanni has two subspecies:1

  • O. n. neumanni
  • O. n. modicus

Rocky cliffs, outcrops and gorges.

[edit] Behaviour

Diet includes fruit, including figs, and some invertebrates.

It builds a nest of grass on a ledge.
