A shallow and eutrophic lake with richly vegetated banks and extensive reedbeds. The surrounding area consists of damp meadows and open farmland with patches of coniferous woodland.

Breeding birds include Great Bittern and Marsh Harrier, Spotted Crake and Osprey. Common Crane, Corn Crake and Ortolan Bunting also occur in summer. The area is also good during passage periods with regular Whooper Swan, Smew, Red-throated Pipit and Lapland Bunting.
