Identification
32cm
Brownish-grey above marked with black and buff, tawny-buff below barred darker. Head and neck buff prominently spotted with black. Bill slender and curved, legs yellowish or greyish.
Distribution
South America: found in central and south-east Peru, Bolivia, Chile and western Argentina.
Taxonomy
The SACC has evaluated N. kalinowskii as a synonym of N. ornata branickii - a subspecies of Ornate Tinamou. However, the Opus retains N. kalinowskii as a full species awaiting further deliberation. Clements[1] recognizes N. kalinowskii as a full species.
Subspecies[1]
Three subspecies are recognized by Clements:
- N. o. branickii:
- Central Peru (Ancash to Apurímac)
- N. o. ornata:
- N. o. rostrata:
- Andes of north-western Argentina (Jujuy and La Rioja)
The form Kalinowski's Tinamou (Nothoprocta kalinowskii) was described from three specimens. However, most checklist and the SACC now consider this form a synonym of N. o. branickii.
Habitat
Scrub and open woodland.
Behaviour
Diet
Like other Tinamous, the Ornate Tinamou eats fruit off the ground or low-lying bushes. They also eat small amounts of invertebrates, flower buds, tender leaves, seeds, and roots.
Breeding
The male incubates the eggs which may come from as many as 4 different females, and raises the chicks until they are ready to be on their own, usually 2-3 weeks. The nest is located on the ground in dense brush or between raised root buttresses.
