Identification
70-cm. A medium-sized Hornbill.
- All-black plumage
- White tail
- Pale ivory-yellow casque and bill
- Black base to lower mandible
- White bare skin around eye and on throat
- Red eye with black orbital ring
Females are smaller, with a smaller casque and dark grey-brown eyes.
Juveniles have an even smaller bill with a grey base and dark grey eyes without a black orbital ring.
Distribution
Palawan and its satellite islands in the westernmost Philippines.
A restricted-range species with a fragmented range. Threatened by hunting and loss of habitat.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
It forms a superspecies with Malabar Pied Hornbill and Oriental Pied Hornbill.
Habitat
Forests, mangrove swamps, cultivated land, bushland, secondary growth and mountain forest.
Occurs up to 900m.
Behaviour
Feeds on fruits, insects and small reptiles.
Forages in pairs or in small noisy groups, also having communal roosting sites.
Only few informations about breeding. One photographed nest was ca. 20m up in a tree hole, the entrance sealed with the female and the chicks inside.
Vocalisations
The bird emits loud calls like kaaww and kreik-kreik.
