70-cm. A medium-sized Hornbill.
- All-black plumage
- White tail
- Pale ivory-yellow casque and bill
- Black base to lower mandible
- White bare skin around eye and on throat
- Red eye with black orbital ring
Females are smaller, with a smaller casque and dark grey-brown eyes.
Juveniles have an even smaller bill with a grey base and dark grey eyes without a black orbital ring.

This is a monotypic species.
It forms a superspecies with Malabar Pied Hornbill and Oriental Pied Hornbill.
