Clements recognizes three subspecies:
 +
* Z. m. whiteheadi in the western Himalayas (northern Pakistan to west Nepal)
 +
* Z. m. mollissima from eastern Himalayas to southeast Tibet; winters to Myanmar and Indochina
 +
* Z. m. griseiceps from southwest China (Sichuan and Yunnan) to northern Vietnam (Tonkin)

However, recent work has revealed that Plain-backed Thrush is in fact three species, including an overlooked one. IOC already recognizes those three species:
 +
* Alpine Thrush - Zoothera mollissima (with whiteheadi)

* Sichuan Thrush - Zoothera griseiceps
 +
* Himalayan Thrush - Zoothera salimalii (from northwest India (West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh) to south China (Yunnan)
