Identification
Male 86.5-89.5 cm, female 76-84 cm. A large black hornbill with a short white tail.
Male
- Dark rufous crown and nape
- Creamy white sides of head and upper breast
- Pale yellow bill with red-brown base
- Wreathed casque
- Yellow inflatable throat skin
Female
- All black plumage (except tail)
- Smaller than male
- Blue throat sac
Juveniles are similar to adults but they have a smaller bill and no casque
Similar species
Smaller than Wreathed Hornbill. Note also red bill base, lack of ridges on mandibles and missing dark bar on throat sac. This bird has a pale head, neck and tail. The base of its bill is brown.
Distribution
South-east Myanmar, Thailand and northern peninsular Malaysia.
Uncommon to rare in its small range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Sometimes considered conspecific with Wreathed Hornbill.
This species has been placed in the genus Aceros.
Habitat
Mixed deciduous, dry and humid evergreen forests, mainly in the lowlands. Occurs up to 1000m.
Behaviour
Its diet comprises fruit, invertebrates and small vertebrates. Forages mainly in the canopy. It builds nests in holes in tall, broad trees, from January-June.
Vocalisation
Loud keh-kek-kehk.
