Poospiza alticola

Identification

15.5 cm. This is a grey-and-rufous bird, with a dark head, long eyebrow and a white moustache. Its throat and underparts are white, and the sides of the breast are cinnamon. Its upperparts are grey-brown, with darker wings and taol. The wing coverts and flight feathers are pale. Juveniles are darker and less rufous.

Similar species

Chestnut-breasted Mountain Finch P. caesar has rufous breast.

Distribution

Peru.

Taxonomy

Habitat

Subtropical or tropical moist montanes.

Behaviour

Its diet includes the sugary secretions and insects from the undersides of Gynoxys leaves and from Polylepis and Alnus.
