[edit] Identification

A large (31cm.) pigeon with uniform grayish-purple plumage, slightly darker back than underparts. Iris whitish in adults of most subspecies, but dark maroon in the nominate group. Pink legs.

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.

[edit] Taxonomy

Five subspecies are recognized: plumbea, delicata, baeri, chapmani, and pallescens. Restall quotes sources for including bogotensis in Plumbeous Pigeon, while the general agreement is to place that taxon as Patagioenas subvinacea bogotensis i.e. as a race of Ruddy Pigeon.
Plumbeous Pigeon has previously been placed in genus Columba.

Subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montanes.

Usually is found in the canopy.
