The name Purple Roller is also used for the Rufous-crowned Roller (Coracias naevius) of Africa; Gill & Wright (2006) use Purple Roller for Coracias naevius, and Azure Dollarbird for Eurystomus azureus.

Endemic to the Northern Moluccas: Halmahera, Ternate, Tidore, Kasiruta and Bacan, Indonesia
