Also known as the Brazilian Cardinal.

7.5 inches in length. Sexes similar. The adult is dark grey with a white neck and underparts. Its head, crest and upper breast are bright red. Its bill is silvery grey and its legs are dark. Juveniles have a brown head, crest and upper breast with a dark bill.

Native to South America and introduced to the Hawaiian Islands circa 1930.

The female lays 2-5 eggs which she incubates for 12-13 days.

The diet includes seeds, plant matter, insects, and fruit. It is a ground feeder.
