- Erythrogonys cinctus
Identification
17-20cm. Black cap or hood, merging at nape to grey-brown of back, white chin and throat, broad black band on breast joining nape and also extending to flanks as chestnut stripe, white belly and vent, grey brown back and mantle, black upperwing with white trailing edge. Red upper leg, red bill with dark tip.
Distribution
Southern New Guinea and Australia.
Taxonomy
A monotypic species.
Habitat
Freshwater wetland, occasionally saline wetlands.
Behaviour
Its diet includes arthropods, molluscs, annelids and seeds.
It nests on ground, sometimes using nests of other birds such as Hoary-headed Grebes. 4 cream lined, speckled or blotched eggs are laid.
